Braybourne End

Harpenden, Hertfordshire

The site is located within the private Woodhill Avenue Estate, an area which falls within a designated ‘Residential Area of Exceptional Character’. With this in mind, the development must reflect the prevailing character and density of the area.

The Georgian design principles have been adhered to; including historically sensitive detailing and interventions. The introduction of well proportioned windows, portico and large doors give a sense of formal grandeur.

This new development consists of a two storey dwelling with accommodation in the roof, a new stone coach house, and walled garden area with greenhouse.

All works have been completed in a period style, consistent both with the prestigious character of the surrounding neighbourhood and respectful of the architectural language to be found in this townscape character area. The windows are of classical vertical proportions with restrained plaster moulds.

The positioning of the new house has been informed by the existing mature landscape setting. The aim was to create private amenity spaces, such as the walled garden, whilst sculpting the gardens to nestle the property into its surroundings.
